Natural Raw Stones

File Under Pop offers a range of tiles made from natural, raw lava stone, which is extracted from the Sicilian Volcano of Mount Etna. Raw lava stone is a striking product of nature with a lively surface, highlighting minerals and other natural elements that the stone consists of.

Natural raw lava stone tiles have the same high level of durability as the File Under Pop collection of glazed lava stone tiles. They are highly resistant to temperature changes, shock and scratches, making them a perfect option for both indoor and outdoor surfaces of any kind. Like other natural stones, File Under Pop raw lava stone lives and breathes, and needs to be treated with a special polish in order to close of the surface and keep it beautiful over time. Much like treating a piece of wood with oil to give it strength and color. File Under Pop will happily recommend the right product for this procedure.

Unlike other stones, such as marble, lava stone has no veins in one direction as it is compacted and hardened over thousands of years in the depth of the volcano. Therefore, each piece of lava stone has an entirely unique set of minerals, which will give all raw lava stone tiles a distinctive expression in regards to color and surface.

At File Under Pop we have developed our own techniques for treating the raw lava stone, offering a selection of surface expressions ranging from a smooth, matt polished finish - e.g. well suited for bathroom floors or counter tops - to a lighter finish with an exceptional, bush hammered surface. All surfaces encapsulate and highlight the natural elements and patterns of unglazed lava stone.
